CFN Shakedown Cruise: Calvin Beal 42

FRIENDSHIP, ME – When Jeromy Simmons tells you his decision to have one of SW Boatworks’ new Calvin Beal 42 hulls was “a leap of faith,” he’s not kidding.

At the time that the Friendship, Maine lobsterman’s new 42’x15’ Avery & Alden was just a twinkle in his eye, a Calvin 42 had yet to float.

“I knew it was based on the 38’ Calvin Beal,” says Jeromy.  (See sidebar page 26.)  “That’s a good hull … and so are the Calvin 44s.  I just figured this one had to be.”

Jeromy credits Milbridge lobsterman Eric Beal with providing guidance and inspiration during the process.

“Eric had the first hull – the Calvin 38 that they turned into a 42 and took the mold off of.  When I saw him at the Maine Fishermen’s Forum back in March, I talked to him about how he was setting things up.  He had some good ideas.

“Once Eric launched her this past summer and started hitting some of the races – wow!  That was the light blue Kimberly Ann – a really nice-sailing boat.  I called to congratulate him … and asked a few more questions!”

It might have been a leap of faith, but the landing was a happy one: Jeromy says he’s pretty tickled with his new Calvin 42.
