Shrimp section charts path for 2013-2014

PORTLAND, ME – The northern shrimp resource will receive extra attention this year as it undergoes a “benchmark” stock assessment on top of its annual assessment update.

The Northern Shrimp Section of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) discussed the timetable for both assessments during a June 13 teleconference call and then set the stage for upcoming management actions.

Katie Drew, a stock assessment scientist on the ASMFC staff, explained that the benchmark assessment will be conducted by ASMFC’s Northern Shrimp Technical Committee (TC) and will be subject to a full peer review through the 58th Stock Assessment Review Committee (SARC), which is coordinated by the Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole, MA.  The SARC process is widely used for groundfish, monkfish, scallops, and other federally managed fishery resources.
