Healthy aquaponics is a balancing act between fish and plants

ITHACA, NY – While I was preparing a lecture for Dr. Mike Timmons’ recirculation aquaculture class this spring, an article appeared in the New York Times describing the delights of starting an aquaponics system in your backyard. Half hydroponics, half recirculation aquaculture, aquaponics combines gardening and fish rearing.

I have always left the gardening to my wife, but the fish culture aspect of aquaponics sent me perusing the Internet and scientific literature for fish health issues associated with this type of integrated agriculture.
