New seafood numbers – Tilapia, pangasius show gains, catfish holds its own

US per capita seafood consumption numbers dip, tilapia, pangasius move up on NFI’s Top Ten list

WASHINGTON, DC – Release of the latest US per capita seafood consumption numbers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in early September left many in the domestic aquaculture community puzzled, if not surprised.

Seafood consumption, as reported in NOAA’s Fisheries of the United States 2010, actually declined in this country last year, down to 15.8 pounds per person from 16 pounds the previous year.

While this decline runs contrary to the widespread belief that Americans are adopting healthier eating habits and adding additional seafood to their diets, it is not totally unexpected.
