Egg disinfection may keep viruses at bay

MADISON, WI – Keeping fish viruses such as Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS) and Spring Viremia of Carp (SVC) out of your hatchery takes a complete biosecurity plan. With the appearance of both of these viruses in wild fish in Wisconsin in 2007, the state has taken the lead in educating its fish farmers about the importance of biosecurity.

Egg disinfection is a key part of that plan, particularly in regions that depend on wild broodstock. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection included disinfection guidelines for fish farms in its May 2007 Fish Health Advisory on VHS.
