Compass Publications
Guidelines for electronic files

Compass Publications periodicals are produced on Macintosh computers primarily using the programs Pagemaker and Photoshop. We can generally convert PC based files provided they were created in one of the programs available.

If there is any question about a program or file, please allow plenty of lead time to deal with unforeseen glitches. We will be happy to do a "test run" on a sample file.

If the ad involves multiple attachments, include a list of all elements sent.and fax a copy of the completed ad to (207) 367-2490.

Programs:

We work in Pagemaker and Photoshop on Macintosh computers. If you would like to send us files in any other format, please call us first to make sure that we can work with your files.

We can deal with most word processing formats. We prefer Word 5 (Mac).

Documents may be sent as PDF files readable by Adobe Acrobat 3.0, or as exported EPS files (such as in Freehand or Illustrator). Please note, however, that changes cannot be made on these files.

Fonts:

  • Send copies of both screen and printer fonts for all fonts used in the document
  • Use actual font's typeface (bold, italic, etc.). Do not use program's style palette menu.
  • In an illustration program, create drop shadows and outlines for type. Do not use program's style palette menu.

Graphics

  • Scan: Continuous tone images at 200-300 ppi (pixels per inch)
  • Line art at 1200 ppi
  • Images at least at 100% of size in the final document.
  • Images as either TIFF or EPS files

Continuous tone images such as photographs must have at least a 5% dot percentage. Adjust highlighted areas of a picture to a 2% dot and the shadow areas to 85%, as tones will darken on press. Publications are printed on newsprint.

Color

Create colors using CMYK. Do not use RGB colors. Color names must remain consistent in all art files and in the final document.

Column sizes

Page size is 66x90 picas with an image area of 60x81 picas (10" wide x 13.5" tall)
  • 1 column: 14.25 picas (2-5/16")
  • 2 columns: 29.5 picas (4-7/8")
  • 3 columns: 44.75 picas (7-3/8")
  • 4 columns: 60 picas (10")

Final document should include:

  • Crop marks
  • Registration marks
  • Plate names
  • Any element FPO (placed for position only)

File elements

  • Include supporting elements for document and art, such as:
  • All fonts, including printer and screen
  • Embedded or linked files
  • EPS or TIFF files
  • Logos

Please check your disk to make sure all files have copied correctly. Changes can not be made to postscript files.

Also send a hard copy of the final document either enclosed with the disk or by fax, (207) 367-2490. Include the name of the file and a list of all elements, plus a contact person and telephone number should there be any questions.
