NEW BEDFORD, MA \u2013 The 101\u2019 big steel scalloper Orion is the latest newbuild to join the fleet at the Eastern\/Nordic Fisheries\/O\u2019Hara docks here.<\/p>\n

Like her sister ship Monomoy, (see CFN May, 2016) Orion was built on a standardized John W. Gilbert Associates design.\u00a0 A few tweaks here and there, but overall the Gilbert design has served the company well.<\/p>\n

Like all the Eastern\/Nordic\/O\u2019Hara scallopers, Orion was built by Duckworth Steel Boats of Tarpon Springs, FL.<\/p>\n

She measures 101\u2019x28\u2019x14\u20196\u201d with a double chine, 3\/8\u201d steel hull.\u00a0 Like Monomoy, Orion is equipped with a bulbous bow.<\/p>\n

Orion\u2019s side plating \u2013 from the shucking houses to the transom \u2013 were built with 5\/8\u201d steel.\u00a0 The main deck\/work areas are 1\u201d plating.<\/p>\n

The new boat\u2019s fish hold is wet for now, though she was built with freezing-at-sea in mind.\u00a0 If and when that happens, there\u2019s a space built into the fish hold\/lazarette area that can be used to hold refrigeration…<\/p>\n
