Welcome to another CFN Shakedown Cruise.<\/i><\/p>\n

Periodically, we will focus on a new launch and dig a little deeper into what went into the project \u2013 whether it be a new model or a hull well known to the New England commercial market.\u00a0 What we hope to do is provide insight and information our readers can apply to their own setups \u2026 and, as always, offer up a little entertainment along the way. \u00a0\u00a0<\/i>\u2014Editor<\/i><\/p>\n

FRIENDSHIP, ME \u2013 When Jeromy Simmons tells you his decision to have one of SW Boatworks\u2019 new Calvin Beal 42 hulls was \u201ca leap of faith,\u201d he\u2019s not kidding.<\/p>\n

At the time that the Friendship, Maine lobsterman\u2019s new 42\u2019x15\u2019 Avery & Alden was just a twinkle in his eye, a Calvin 42 had yet to float.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew it was based on the 38\u2019 Calvin Beal,\u201d says Jeromy.\u00a0 (See sidebar page 26.)\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s a good hull \u2026 and so are the Calvin 44s.\u00a0 I just figured this one had to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeromy credits Milbridge lobsterman Eric Beal with providing guidance and inspiration during the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cEric had the first hull \u2013 the Calvin 38 that they turned into a 42 and took the mold off of.\u00a0 When I saw him at the Maine Fishermen\u2019s Forum back in March, I talked to him about how he was setting things up.\u00a0 He had some good ideas.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce Eric launched her this past summer and started hitting some of the races \u2013 wow!\u00a0 That was the light blue Kimberly Ann \u2013 a really nice-sailing boat.\u00a0 I called to congratulate him \u2026 and asked a few more questions!\u201d<\/p>\n

It might have been a leap of faith, but the landing was a happy one: Jeromy says he\u2019s pretty tickled with his new Calvin 42.<\/p>\n
