\u00a0The loft of 56-year-old Jonesport lobsterman Stevie Carver\u2019s house is chock full of happy memories and good vibes.<\/p>\n

The walls and ceilings are adorned with treasures \u2013 each with their own story: old oars; buoys; a gaft here; running lights there \u2026 and so many pictures \u2013 from faded black and whites (soul makes up for resolution) to oversize color shots: boats\/folks\/smiles.<\/p>\n

Hanging from the pull string of the ceiling lamp \u2013 in a position to oversee the room \u2013 is an old hand-knit bait pocket, packed with sand dollars.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve been there for years, says Stevie.\u00a0 \u201cThey\u2019re to remind me that no matter how bad things ever get, I\u2019ve got a pocket full of dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n

That Downeast Zen approach was well-tested on Sept. 8 when Stevie\u2019s 32\u2019 Holland Bigger Dirls was destroyed by an early-morning fire.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an unnatural thing when a boat burns \u2013 fire versus water \u2013 and awful under any circumstances.<\/p>\n

But as word of the loss of the Bigger Dirls spread along the coast, it hit a lot of folks very hard.<\/p>\n

There was a common theme to the responses:<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople from everywhere know Stevie and the Bigger Dirls from the<\/p>\n

lobster boat races: he\u2019s always got a big smile for everybody \u2013 and that was one good-looking boat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat wasn\u2019t just Stevie Carver\u2019s boat.\u00a0 She meant a lot to a lot of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you saw that black hull with the yellow boot and the white house with the buff trim, well \u2026 you didn\u2019t forget her.\u201d…<\/p>\n
