A conversation with Therese Sauvageau, lobsterwoman of Beverly, MA, and delegate to the Massachusetts Lobstermen\u2019s Association (MLA) board of directors, on her fifty years of lobstering. \u2013Editor<\/i><\/p>\n

BEVERLY, MA \u2013 \u201cEverything was just simpler then,\u201d says Therese Sauvageau, who started her career as a ten-year-old hanging out at the docks.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd less expensive, too.\u00a0 A lobster permit was $10.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like a wharf rat.\u00a0 I lived down the street from the docks.\u00a0 They thought I was a boy,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey called me \u2018Ralph.\u2019\u00a0 I would reel nets and bait tub trawls.\u00a0 I\u2019d get bait from that and someone would give me a (wooden) trap with a hole in it.\u00a0 I\u2019d fix broken traps, (fish with them) and bring back large lobsters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her first boat was a wooden rowboat that she took out into the bay.\u00a0 She graduated, she said, to a 10\u2019 skiff, and then a 12\u2019 skiff, and then, by the time she was 20, a 22\u2019 lobster boat, with no cabin.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt had a canvas over the front, so you were out in the weather.\u00a0 And I\u2019d go out in all kinds of weather,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe guys would want to go in, but they\u2019d say, \u2018We can\u2019t go in, she\u2019s still out here.\u2019 \u201c…<\/p>\n
