GLOUCESTER, MA \u2013 Angela Sanfilippo, the inspired and longtime president of the Gloucester Fishermen\u2019s Wives Association (GFWA) was honored last month by both the Boston seafood industry and the City of Gloucester.<\/p>\n

Sanfilippo, the wife, daughter, and sister of fishermen, is also the executive director of the Massachusetts Fishing Partnership Support Services.<\/p>\n

She has served as a tireless advocate for the oceans and for fishing communities for some 40 years.<\/p>\n

On Aug. 7, Sanfilippo was inducted into the Boston Seafood Hall of Fame during the fifth annual Boston Seafood Festival.<\/p>\n

Richard Stavis, CEO of Stavis Seafoods and a director of the Boston Fisheries Association, presented the award, citing Sanfilippo\u2019s considerable accomplishments.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder her leadership, the GWFA has been an unwavering force for the protection of New England\u2019s precious fishing grounds and heritage.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wives (GWFA) have improved safety standards on US vessels, and they created the first subsidized health plan for fishermen, a model for both a Massachusetts plan and Obamacare,\u201d\u00a0 Stavis continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey established a marine sanctuary at Stellwagon Bank; they have worked diligently to develop new seafood markets, particularly for abundant but lesser known species such as redfish and whiting.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd, above all, the Fishermen\u2019s Wives have labored to protect the health of the oceans and the future of the fisheries that feed us all,\u201d\u00a0 Stavis said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAngela brings her voice, not only to Gloucester, but to all of Massachusetts,\u201d said Gloucester Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken, in a personal tribute…<\/p>\n
