FRIENDSHIP, ME \u2013 I asked lobsterman\/boat builder Gilbert Simmons of Friendship how many boats he\u2019s finished over the years.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I don\u2019t know \u2026\u201d Gil said, grinning.\u00a0 \u201cWe don\u2019t really keep track.\u00a0 We just do \u2018em.\u201d<\/p>\n

That would be Gil: do something and do it really well<\/i> \u2026 and act like it\u2019s no big deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell,\u201d I say, taking a different tack, \u201cwhen did you start doing finish work?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gil looks up into the rafters and squints one eye like he\u2019s doing some heavy ciphering.<\/p>\n

\u201c19 \u2026 84?<\/i>\u00a0 Yeah \u2013 1984, I think.\u00a0 I\u2019m pretty sure it was a BHM that we finished.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gil\u2019s son Jason spoke up from down in the bilges of the 44\u2019 Calvin Beal that\u2019s currently underway in their Simmons Boatworks shop.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s around 40 boats altogether, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gil shrugged.\u00a0 \u201cSounds about right.\u201d<\/p>\n
