SORRENTO, ME \u2013 \u201cThat\u2019s a wicked hat.\u201d<\/p>\n
Boatbuilder Joe Sargent tugged on one of the earflaps of his faithful red hat that he\u2019s been hauling out every winter for years now.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a beauty, ain\u2019t it?\u201d said Joe, grinning.\u00a0 \u201cCan\u2019t beat it on a day like today.\u201d<\/p>\n
Which was true: the thermometer had finally shouldered its way up into the single numbers, but the wind that was puffing up out of the nor\u2019west was keeping things from getting too balmy.<\/p>\n
It was<\/i> cozy in the wheelhouse of Joe Bennett\u2019s new Haley Mae, however.\u00a0 We were on the mooring in Sorrento harbor, preparing to do a photo shoot.\u00a0 It was one of the first idle days the new 45\u2019 Dixon had known since she\u2019d hit the water a couple weeks before.<\/p>\n
Joe Sargent slid the split wheelhouse door open and stepped out onto the deck to check something.\u00a0 I took advantage of the moment to ask Joe Bennett why he chose Sargent\u2019s Custom Boats to finish his Haley Mae.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re the best,\u201d said Bennett.\u00a0 \u201cI just gave them the basic idea of what I wanted and knew I could trust them to build something that was going to work well and look good.\u201d<\/p>\n
Joe Sargent came back in time for those last few words.\u00a0 He lifted his hat enough to show off his shaved head.<\/p>\n
\u201cLooking good,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s me.\u201d…<\/p>\n
