FRIENDSHIP, ME \u2013 An era has ended.<\/p>\n

Winfield \u201cWinnie\u201d Lash \u2013 boat builder, designer, and co-founder of Lash Brothers Boatyard back in 1946 \u2013 passed away on November 9.<\/p>\n

He was predeceased by his son, Wesley A. Lash, in 2013.\u00a0 Wesley had taken over the reins of the Lash Brothers shop in 1984 when his father retired.\u00a0 Wesley\u2019s son (known to most as \u201cyoung Wes\u201d) joined the operation full-time in 1992.<\/p>\n

One of eight brothers who all were multi-talented hard workers, Winnie taught himself about boat design at an early age, eventually becoming a skilled and prolific craftsman who could design and build a sleek Friendship sloop \u2013 then turn around and construct a rugged dragger or purse seiner from scratch.<\/p>\n

Wesley always said of his father Winnie: \u201cHe\u2019ll talk about a particular boat or a customer, but as far as what he\u2019s done, you won\u2019t get much out of Father. He\u2019ll tell you to this day that
\nhe doesn\u2019t know how he got through life.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the years that he ran the Lash Brothers shop, Winnie launched somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 boats \u2013 the specialty of the house being high-waisted draggers in the 50-foot range…<\/p>\n
