WASHINGTON, DC \u2013 On Sept. 30, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) finalized $8.8 million in Saltonstall-Kennedy (S-K) grants to fund 33 research projects in the Greater Atlantic Region Fisheries Office (GARFO) as part of $25.1 million in grants approved nationwide.<\/p>\n

The 1954 Saltonstall-Kennedy Act was authored by US Senators Leverett Saltsonstall and John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts to support and market domestic seafood.<\/p>\n

For half a century, the act has funded a grant program using 30% of the federal taxes levied on imported seafood and seafood products.<\/p>\n

The US Dept. of Commerce distributes grant monies through NOAA to regional fisheries offices after appropriation by Congress.<\/p>\n

In 1979, Congress amended the act to allow appropriation of funds to NOAA\u2019s Operations, Research, and Facilities (ORF) for specific projects as designated by Congress, with the remainder of funds to be appropriated to the S-K grant program.<\/p>\n

The 2014\/2015 grant distribution represents two years of grant funding due to the late approval of the federal budget, said Dan Namur, NOAA Fisheries S-K program manager.<\/p>\n

Applications for approximately $10 million in S-K grants for FY2016 are being accepted now through Nov. 2…<\/p>\n
