NEWBURYPORT, MA \u2013 After 18 years as a staffer for the New England Fishery Management Council (NEFMC), Lori Steele is moving to the other side of the country \u2013 and the other side of the table.<\/p>\n

Steele will be leaving the council in early October to take over the helm at the Portland, OR-based West Coast Seafood Processors Association (WCSPA) starting on Nov. 2.<\/p>\n

The WCSPA is an industry-funded advocacy organization that represents shoreside seafood processors in Washington, Oregon, and California.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a big change.\u00a0 I\u2019m really excited.\u00a0 Ever since I got my degree in marine biology, I\u2019ve wanted to work on the industry\u2019s side as a fishery advocate,\u201d Steele said.<\/p>\n

But opportunities like this were few and far between in New England, she added.<\/p>\n

Steele grew up in Virginia Beach, and earned her bachelor\u2019s degree in marine biology at the University of Miami in Florida.\u00a0 She later earned a masters degree in coastal environmental management at Duke University before coming north.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019ve never been a fan of the weather in New England,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The WCSPA job was one that she had her eye on for some time.<\/p>\n

Steele said she had heard WCSPA Executive Director Rod Moore speak at conferences and frankly coveted his job.<\/p>\n
