Welcome to another CFN Shakedown Cruise.<\/i><\/p>\n

Periodically, we will focus on a new launch and dig a little deeper into what went into the project \u2013 whether it be a new model or a hull well known to the New England commercial market.\u00a0 What we hope to do is provide insight and information our readers can apply to their own setups \u2026 and, as always, offer up a little entertainment along the way.<\/i><\/p>\n

PORT CLYDE, ME \u2013 In a way, it\u2019s sort of like one of those love stories where the guy\u2019s heart is stolen by a fetching beauty \u2013 but years go by before circumstances allow things to come to fruition.<\/p>\n

Sort of.<\/p>\n

For one thing, you can\u2019t say that Port Clyde, ME lobsterman Gerry Cushman rushed into getting a new boat: he\u2019s been working out of the same 36\u2019 Crowley for 28 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Crowley was a great boat,\u201d says Gerry.\u00a0 \u201cI still own it, in fact.\u00a0 I paid $45,000 for it 28 years ago \u2026 it doesn\u2019t owe me a thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d thought about a new boat for a few years \u2013 I had money set aside in a capital fund \u2013 but I wasn\u2019t in a hurry to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hurry or not, Gerry Cushman had his heart set on what he was going to have for a new boat when the time came.<\/p>\n

\u201cGary Davis \u2013 one of the local fishermen here in town \u2013 had a Holland 38 built years ago and \u2026 man<\/i> \u2026 I loved the looks of that boat the first time I saw it.\u00a0 It was like having a crush, you know what I mean?\u00a0 I knew if I had another boat built, it was going to be a Holland.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gerry\u2019s crush wasn\u2019t all about good looks \u2013 it actually went deeper than that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was out halibut fishing with my brother Michael on his Holland 38,\u201d says Gerry.\u00a0 \u201cIt was blowing southwest a good 25 and we were working right along, hauling trawls.\u00a0 And I said to myself, \u2018Look at this thing \u2026 it\u2019s a good breeze, but this is comfortable as hell!\u2019\u00a0 That\u2019s really what made my mind up for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a twist to this love story, however: it was a 38\u2019x12\u201910\u201d hull that stole his heart originally \u2026 but there was actually a 41-footer in his future…<\/p>\n
