ELLSWORTH, ME \u2013 Scallop closed areas along the coast of Maine are set to open this December, and fishermen are anxious to access the areas they\u2019ve been kept out of for three years.
\nThe need to prevent these areas from being quickly depleted during the first open season created a sense of urgency at the June 21 meeting of the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) Scallop Advisory Council (SAC). In the fall of 2009, a suite of areas encompassing almost 20% of Maine\u2019s territorial waters were closed to scallop fishing. The closures were an integral part of a plan to revitalize the Maine state waters scallop fishery, which has failed to recover after a significant decline<\/p>\n
