NEW BEDFORD, MA \u2013 The nation\u2019s Number One fishing port hosts its annual Working Waterfront Festival \u2013 a free, family-friendly celebration of commercial fishing culture \u2013 once again this year on the working piers of New Bedford\u2019s historic waterfront Saturday, Sept. 26 and Sunday, Sept. 27.<\/p>\n

More than simply a celebration, the Working Waterfront Festival is a unique opportunity for the public to get a firsthand look at the culture of fishing and for the commercial fishing community to tell its own story.<\/p>\n

The event presents all that goes into bringing seafood from the ocean to the table in a way that is hands-on, educational, and fun.<\/p>\n

2015 theme<\/b><\/p>\n

This year, the festival explores the objects of the industry \u2013 its unique food, clothing, tools, gear, art, crafts, and more \u2013 with the theme \u201cEvery Object Tells a Story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Festival goers will be able to watch demonstrations of maritime crafts such as boat building, net mending, model making, marlinspike artistry, and knot tying.<\/p>\n

They can also view exhibits of industry antiques (historic tools, gear, and gadgets) and unusual catches (the unexpected things that come up in the net).<\/p>\n

Large industry objects such as engines and net drums will be displayed on Steamship Pier.<\/p>\n

Foodways demonstrations will include ethnic approaches to seafood as well as demonstrations of filleting and shucking.<\/p>\n
