NARRAGANSETT, RI \u2013 \u201cYou know, I\u2019ve resisted doing anything like this for a long time,\u201d says Jay Gallup in his big ol\u2019 Rhode Island-accented voice.<\/p>\n

The \u201cthis\u201d Jay\u2019s referring to is an interview: talking about his family\u2019s business, Rhode Island Engine (RIE).\u00a0 But after discussing it with his brother David (the two are co-owners of RIE these days), Jay has consented to sit down with me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve always kind of just done our own thing over the years, you know?\u201d he says.\u00a0 \u201cYou don\u2019t talk about what you do \u2013 you do<\/i> it, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Hang around Jay Gallup for an hour or two and you\u2019re going to get plenty of bumper sticker-worthy quotes.\u00a0 And he means every word.<\/p>\n

Jay sits back in his chair and a little of the boom goes out of his voice.\u00a0 \u201cBut, you know, David and I talked about it and \u2026 we\u2019ve got a good crew and we\u2019re proud of what we do; what our father did; what our grandfather started.\u00a0 So, maybe it\u2019s a good thing \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

He points to my digital recorder, sitting between us atop his desk.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that thing on?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYep,\u201d I say.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo \u2026 whattaya want to know?\u201d<\/p>\n
