Welcome to another CFN Shakedown Cruise.<\/i><\/p>\n

Periodically, we will focus on a new launch and dig a little deeper into what went into the project \u2013 whether it be a new model or a hull well-known to the New England commercial market.\u00a0 What we hope to do is provide insight and information our readers can apply to their own setups \u2026 and, as always, offer up a little entertainment along the way. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u2014Editor<\/i><\/p>\n

SOUTH BRISTOL, ME \u2013 One of the key moments in this issue\u2019s Shakedown Cruise actually took place when the vessel\u2019s owner wasn\u2019t<\/i> aboard the boat.<\/p>\n

Spruce Head, ME lobsterman Jim Tripp was standing alongside me on a float moored out in John\u2019s Bay.\u00a0 I was peering through the viewfinder of my camera at Tripp\u2019s new 47\u2019 Outer Fall, just launched by John\u2019s Bay Boat Co. and builder Peter Kass had the helm while Tripp watched his boat run.<\/p>\n

Pete had made some slow turns for the camera and jogged by at cruise speed.\u00a0 \u201cMake one wide-open pass and we\u2019ll call it good,\u201d I yelled to him.\u00a0 \u201cCome right at us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pete glanced at Jim Tripp, who was smiling.\u00a0 \u201cYep \u2013 give it to her,\u201d said Jim.<\/p>\n

So he did.<\/p>\n

\"shakedown\"Pete cruised off a fair distance, cut the wheel hard down, swung around towards us and dumped the throttle.<\/p>\n

Think about it: with her 803 hp C18 Cat right in the bucket, the 47\u2019 x 15\u20196\u201d Outer Fall skimmed by the float we were on at 23.5 knots \u2013 maybe 20 feet away, at most.<\/p>\n

There was one slap of wake up through the planks of the float and that was it.<\/p>\n

There are boats in this world that would\u2019ve soaked us \u2026 or at the very least, got our feet wet.\u00a0 Outer Fall \u2013 5\u20194\u201d draft and all \u2013 didn\u2019t haul much ocean behind her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWow \u2026\u201d I took in what had just happened.\u00a0 I turned to Jim Tripp, who was now smiling even more.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s Pete,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cThe guy\u2019s an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n

The soul of wood<\/b><\/p>\n

Even if you know Jim Tripp, you may not really<\/i> know Jim Tripp.<\/p>\n

Simply put, the 58-year-old Tripp may be lobstering\u2019s answer to musician Steve Earle \u2013 the original hardcore…<\/p>\n
