MYSTIC, CT \u2013 At the end of the New England Fishery Management Council\u2019s (NEFMC) April meeting, the council requested that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) prepare an estimate of the cost-revenue ratio for at-sea monitoring of Northeast Multispecies sectors that would take into account rapidly declining annual catch limits (ACLs) and coverage methodology.<\/p>\n

The council also initiated a framework to address at-sea monitoring costs for sectors in the groundfish fishery.<\/p>\n

The council took both actions concurrently given the likelihood that NMFS will run out of funding for at-sea monitors (ASM) by late August, thereby shifting the cost to the fishing industry.<\/p>\n

Amendment 16 called for industry funding for ASM, however NMFS has covered the industry portion of the cost since 2010 when AMD 16 was implemented.<\/p>\n
