For those readers who do not know, Diane Cowan, Phd, is the executive director of The Lobster Conservancy, and the author of the popular \u201cAsk The Lobster Doc\u201d column that appeared in Commercial Fisheries News for several years.<\/i><\/p>\n

Cowan made national news recently when her struggles with being iced-in on a coastal island, and essentially cut off from civilization and supplies, resulted in an emergency air drop.<\/i><\/p>\n

Even for the scrappy Cowan, this winter has posed unique challenges, along with new scientific insight.<\/i><\/p>\n

She has been willing to share her experience and knowledge in this special edition of Ask The Lobster Doc.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

FRIENDSHIP LONG ISLAND, ME \u2013 The last time I went to the mainland for groceries, dog food, bird seed, banking, and normal stuff like that was Jan. 22.<\/p>\n

I only know the date because I got the credit card bills.<\/p>\n

The last time I went to the mainland for a shower and mail was Jan. 30.<\/p>\n

I know this because I wrote about it in my journal.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the last time I touched a dollar bill.<\/p>\n

Feb. 2, 9 pm.\u00a0 Iced-in.<\/p>\n

I know because I went out to check on my boat.<\/p>\n

I always told summer people that if I could only be out here on the island for one month of the year, that month would be February \u2013 because it is the most aesthetically beautiful month.<\/p>\n

So I was here for all of February, and part of March and January, without leaving.\u00a0 It was the most beautiful thing I\u2019ve ever seen in my life and I wouldn\u2019t trade it for anything in the world.<\/p>\n

But, there were things I couldn\u2019t have known, feelings I didn\u2019t know I could have.<\/p>\n

When the ice took over and the boats couldn\u2019t go in or out of Friendship Harbor, my world became completely silent.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t notice until later when someone asked about it, but I too became completely silent….<\/p>\n
