STONINGTON, ME \u2013 The crew in the machine shop at Billings Diesel & Marine is doing its thing, prepping the 36′ Northern Bay that sits on the floor to receive her new engine.\u00a0 Surprisingly, the 36-footer\u2019s new D13 Volvo \u2013 a 13-liter inline 6 \u2013 is going to fit into the space where the old V-8 had been without too much fuss.<\/p>\n

\u201cWon\u2019t be a problem for these boys, anyway,\u201d says the boat\u2019s owner.\u00a0 \u201cThey can do about anything: mechanical work, carpentry, fiberglassing \u2026 and they\u2019re good workers.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been watching \u2018em.\u201d<\/p>\n

His old engine rests in the shadow of the boat\u2019s stern: a V-8 Mack Diesel purchased from American Marine Diesel back in 1997.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis ol\u2019 bulldog has done good by me.\u201d\u00a0 He pats the big Mack\u2019s expansion tank.\u00a0 \u201cShe\u2019s still running, but I just didn\u2019t want to take a chance on getting broke down in the middle of fishing.\u201d<\/p>\n

We walk over to where the shiny green Volvo sits on her pallet, waiting to be hoisted aboard.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, Bri,\u201d he says to me, pointing to a sticker on top of the D13, \u201cI\u2019m going down in horsepower.\u00a0 This one\u2019s only 700.\u201d<\/p>\n

Which is true: the Mack carried a stock rating of 900 horses.<\/p>\n

The talk of some fresh-faced young buck, you ask?<\/p>\n

Naw: that\u2019s Andrew Gove \u2013 you might know him better as the owner of Uncle\u2019s UFO.<\/p>\n

Andrew will be 85 in May.<\/p>\n

The view from Andrew and Rose Gove\u2019s dining table is a beautiful one \u2013 but a cold one, as well.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot of ice in Stonington Harbor on this mid-February day and a lot of snow piled up on the land.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s hardly any wind though, and Andy shakes his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could haul today if my boat wasn\u2019t on the bank,\u201d he says.\u00a0 \u201cMy gear will be half-chafed off by the time I get back overboard.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow big of a gang are you fishing these days?\u201d I ask, sipping at the steaming cup of tea he\u2019s set before me.<\/p>\n
