{"id":5948,"date":"2015-01-26T13:48:57","date_gmt":"2015-01-26T18:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/?p=5948"},"modified":"2015-01-26T15:15:49","modified_gmt":"2015-01-26T20:15:49","slug":"assessing-forage-fish-part-of-mid-atlantics-move-toward-ecosystem-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/assessing-forage-fish-part-of-mid-atlantics-move-toward-ecosystem-management\/","title":{"rendered":"Assessing forage fish part of Mid-Atlantic\u2019s move toward ecosystem management"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PHILADELPHIA, PA \u2013 The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council recently tackled the first of five policy documents that ultimately will be used to develop a guidance document for moving forward with an \u201cecosystem approach to fisheries management \u201d (EAFM).<\/p>\n<p>Due out later this year, the EAFM guidance document will be a synthesis of position papers on climate change and stock abundance, habitat conservation and management objectives, social and economic considerations in setting optimum yield specifications, and species and fisheries interrelations.<\/p>\n<p>According to the council\u2019s 2014\u20132018 Strategic Plan, the objective of the EAFM guidance document is to help the council make fisheries management decisions that promote the ecologically sustainable utilization of living marine resources while maintaining ecosystem productivity, structure, and function.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we move forward, the EAFM guidance document will give us a frame of reference for decision-making while we start establishing council policy for addressing these issues,\u201d explained council staffer Rich Seagraves.<\/p>\n<p>Council staffers and Northeast Fisheries Science Center researchers presented a forage fish white paper outlining possible management strategies for currently unmanaged forage fish and how forage fish management might affect future Atlantic mackerel, squid, and butterfish specifications&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"CFN_2_15cover\" src=\"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/CFN_2_15cover-243x300.jpg\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Read the rest of this story and much, much more in the February issue of\u00a0<em>Commercial Fisheries News<\/em>. \u00a0Buy this issue or\u00a0<a title=\"Marketplace\" href=\"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/marketplace\/\">Subscribe<\/a>.
