(Shelley Wigglesworth photo)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cRight around 9pm, the wind picked up to at least 35-45 mph and the seas were swelling at about 8&#8242;-12&#8242;,\u201d McLaughlin said.\u00a0 \u201cThe visibility got really bad at that time, too, because of the waves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two other boats were within a mile of the Rye, NH-based Pin Wheel when the weather changed \u2013 the F\/V Mad Dog from Saco, ME and the F\/V Miss Sambvca from Gloucester, another boat featured in the TV show, but with a different crew.<\/p>\n<p>Tim O\u2019Brien, captain of the Mad Dog, recalled the conditions that night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was choppy earlier in the day,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cThen it got crazy, blowing hard, and it came on fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dave Potter, the 50-year-old captain of Miss Sambvca, described how, within a matter of minutes, the situation rapidly deteriorated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce it got dark out, the wind turned around, and it came in hard.\u00a0 It was blowing 45 mph northwest before we knew it,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cThen two rogue waves came on to our boat \u2013 one from the left, one from the right \u2013 one right after the other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first one broke the ropes on the ice vats and the other one came up over the top of the boat right after and all the weight shifted to the starboard side,\u201d Potter continued.\u00a0 \u201cWhen that happened, I knew that was it.\u00a0 We began taking on water real quick and began going down fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dennis Bonazzoli, the 39-year-old mate on the Miss Sambvca, said he made a distress call just in the nick of time&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"Meta Slider - HTML Overlay - CFN_12_14-cover\" src=\"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/CFN_12_14-cover-121x150.jpg\" width=\"121\" height=\"150\" \/>Read the rest of this story and much, much more in the December issue of\u00a0<em>Commercial Fisheries News<\/em>. \u00a0Buy this issue or\u00a0<a title=\"Marketplace\" href=\"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/marketplace\/\">Subscribe<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0[add_to_cart=5524]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>(Read online immediately with access key and download for future reference.)<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"ninja-children-wrap\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GLOUCESTER, MA \u2013 On the evening of October 19, Tyler McLaughlin of the National Geographic Channel\u2019s hit television series \u201cWicked Tuna\u201d and his mate, Stephen Field, were fishing for bluefin tuna about 10 miles east of Gloucester on McLaughlin\u2019s boat Pin Wheel.
