Thirty years or so <\/i><\/b>of saying \u2018Why not?\u2019<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

STEUBEN, ME \u2013 \u201cMan, that\u2019s a big boat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not a very insightful statement, for sure, but it\u2019s the first thing that came out of my mouth when I looked down into one of the hulls being finished at H&H Marine Inc.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeventeen feet six inches wide by how long?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis one will be 46 feet,\u201d said H&H\u2019s Bruce Grindal.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve ever called H&H about a boat, he\u2019s the guy you\u2019ve probably spoken to.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course it could be 44 feet,\u201d said Eric Moores, who co-owns H&H with Grindal.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr 42,\u201d said Harold Hammond, who does the purchasing for the shop.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt could be narrower,\u201d said Grindal.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr wider,\u201d said Moores.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, if we needed to, we could make the door bigger,\u201d added Hammond.<\/p>\n

Sounds like a Downeast Maine version of an Abbott & Costello routine, doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 The fact is, even though they were smiling when they said it, the guys were serious.\u00a0 H&H Marine advertises a stable of over a dozen basic models, but the sky is pretty much the limit from there.\u00a0 Lengthening, shortening, broadening, customizing sheers, repositioning bulkheads \u2013 they\u2019ve been there and done all that.<\/p>\n

As Moores put it, \u201cNo matter how many molds you have, there\u2019s always a gap to fill.\u00a0 And you have to be willing to do it or you\u2019re not going to get the order.\u201d<\/p>\n

One thing to remember, however:\u00a0 No matter how H&H modifies its basic models to accommodate customers\u2019 needs, they still bear the name of designer Osmond Beal…<\/p>\n
