{"id":4998,"date":"2014-07-28T14:06:52","date_gmt":"2014-07-28T18:06:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/?p=4998"},"modified":"2014-07-28T14:31:01","modified_gmt":"2014-07-28T18:31:01","slug":"bluefin-tuna-harpooners-doing-well-hook-bite-getting-a-good-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/bluefin-tuna-harpooners-doing-well-hook-bite-getting-a-good-start\/","title":{"rendered":"Bluefin tuna harpooners doing well; hook bite getting a good start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HARWICH, MA \u2013 The bluefin tuna fishery was chugging along in mid-July.\u00a0 Dealers reported a somewhat slow though steady stream of landings.\u00a0 Most were coming from boats fishing off Maine, as well as \u201ca few here and there\u201d from around Cape Cod.<\/p>\n<p>The big news was that harpooners, for the first time in close to a decade, were having some real success.\u00a0 As of July 22, the stick boats had taken 22.6 metric tons (mt) of their 36-mt quota, according to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been great,\u201d said Bob Kliss of North Atlantic Traders Inc.\u00a0 \u201cThe water\u2019s still cold and the fish are hanging out on the surface.\u00a0 It\u2019s the perfect recipe for a good harpoon season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was word, too, that bluefin were biting.\u00a0 NMFS reported that the general category had landed 68.5 mt as of July 22.\u00a0 And sizeable schools had been sighted offshore, about 80 miles due east of Boston.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of guys are expecting the fishery to start up in their backyard any time now,\u201d said Rich Ruais, executive director of the American Bluefin Tuna Association.<\/p>\n<p>The purse seine season opened on July 15.\u00a0 The one vessel still fishing in that category got 17 giants \u2013 all 500-plus-pounders \u2013 on her first trip and just missed a significantly larger school, Ruais said&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"CFN_8_14cover\" src=\"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/CFN_8_14cover.jpg\" width=\"192\" height=\"237\" \/><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Read the rest and much, much more in the August issue of Commercial Fisheries News.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Read online\u00a0immediately and download for future reference.<\/p>\n<p>[add_to_cart=4969]<\/p>\n<div id=\"ninja-children-wrap\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HARWICH, MA \u2013 The bluefin tuna fishery was chugging along in mid-July.\u00a0 Dealers reported a somewhat slow though steady stream of landings.\u00a0 Most were coming from boats fishing off Maine, as well as \u201ca few here and there\u201d from around Cape Cod.
