HARWICH, MA \u2013 The 2014 bluefin tuna fishery opened on June 1 and harpooners soon sprung into action.\u00a0 By midmonth, fish had been landed in ports from Maine to Cape Cod, although fishermen and dealers still characterized it as a relatively slow start due to cool water temperatures and strings of bad-weather days.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s quiet, more like a normal year,\u201d said Bob Kliss of Lynn, MA-based North Atlantic Traders Ltd.\u00a0 \u201cThe market\u2019s strong.\u00a0 We just have to get some fish.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most of the bluefin Kliss had handled as of mid-June were good size, mainly in the 94″-96″ range and dressing out around 340 pounds, with at least one 500-pounder.\u00a0 The quality characteristics were consistent with early season fish \u2013 little fat and red meat.\u00a0 But shape and texture were good and the market was waiting for them.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo far, we haven\u2019t had any of those rubbery fish,\u201d Kliss said.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re seeing a good-eating fish, and that makes marketing them easy.\u201d…<\/p>\n
