PORTLAND, ME \u2013 Faced with a stock that scientists said had technically \u201ccollapsed,\u201d the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission\u2019s (ASMFC) Northern Shrimp Section met here Dec. 3 and agreed by consensus to impose a moratorium on shrimp fishing for the 2014 season.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The section took this extreme action after receiving a grim stock assessment update from its Northern Shrimp Technical Committee (TC).<\/p>\n

One of the \u201cbetter\u201d tows from the 2013 Gloria Michelle shrimp survey. \u00a0Dogfish, redfish, and whiting dominated many hauls, with shrimp being few and far between. \u00a0Overall, 13% of the tows caught no shrimp at all, and 52% caught less than 100 shrimp. \u00a0During the 1984-2011 surveys, fewer than 1% of the tows caught zero shrimp and, on average, only 6% caught less than 100 shrimp. According to the TC, indices of harvestable biomass from this summer\u2019s Gloria Michelle survey were the \u201clowest on record.\u201d\u00a0 Furthermore, results indicated that \u201can unprecedented\u201d three consecutive years of \u201crecruitment failure\u201d had occurred.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere basically are three missing year classes \u2013 2010, 2011, and 2012,\u201d said TC Chairman Kelly Whitmore of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries.\u00a0 \u201cThis does not bode well for the ability of the stock to bounce back in the next few years.\u201d<\/p>\n
