{"id":3642,"date":"2013-11-19T12:07:59","date_gmt":"2013-11-19T17:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/?p=3642"},"modified":"2013-11-20T10:40:15","modified_gmt":"2013-11-20T15:40:15","slug":"scallopers-expand-rsa-priorities-to-include-predation-water-quality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/scallopers-expand-rsa-priorities-to-include-predation-water-quality\/","title":{"rendered":"Scallopers expand RSA priorities to include predation, water quality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GLOUCESTER, MA \u2013 Atlantic sea scallop fishermen are becoming increasingly concerned about the potential impact of global warming, ocean acidification, predation, and disease on their fishery.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Marchetti, president of the Eastern New England Scallop Association, summed it up pretty succinctly this past winter during a meeting of the New England Fishery Management Council\u2019s scallop advisory panel (AP) when he said he had learned a lesson from his 30 years in the lobster industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen what the effects of pesticides, oil spills, and other things did to the lobster fishery in Southern New England.\u00a0 In the back of my mind, it\u2019s always a worry that something could come up from behind and bite us in the ass with scallops,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3643\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/page-20-scallop-survey.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3643\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-3643\" alt=\"VIMS photo Intensive scallop resource surveys always rank as \u201chighest\u201d priorities in the annual industry-funded research set-aside (RSA) program.
