RICHMOND, ME \u2013 The Fund for the Advancement of Sustainable Lobster, the industry group that pursued and obtained Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for Maine lobster earlier this year, is now offering all dealers and processors in the state the opportunity to display the MSC ecolabel on their Maine lobster products.<\/p>\n

Under the MSC certification process, the fund is considered the \u201cclient group,\u201d the first link in the \u201cchain of custody\u201d the MSC uses to assure buyers further down the chain, as well as end-of-the-line consumers, that lobsters carrying the label are indeed MSC-certified Maine lobsters.<\/p>\n

\"page-29-logo_label_msc\"<\/a>On Oct. 8, the fund announced it was offering a licensing agreement that will allow other businesses to become licensees and display the MSC label.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll Maine lobster is eligible to be MSC certified,\u201d explained fund organizer John Hathaway of Shucks Maine Lobster.\u00a0 \u201cBut what brings it into the chain of custody is when someone licensed by the client buys the lobster from the lobsterman.\u00a0 The critical thing is that first point of sale.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hathaway added that the MSC certification doesn\u2019t require anything of Maine-licensed lobstermen \u2013 no additional paperwork and no fees…<\/p>\n
