{"id":3438,"date":"2013-10-21T12:51:36","date_gmt":"2013-10-21T16:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/?p=3438"},"modified":"2013-10-21T12:51:36","modified_gmt":"2013-10-21T16:51:36","slug":"bullard-highlights-value-of-scallops-lobsters-new-bedford-to-northeast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/bullard-highlights-value-of-scallops-lobsters-new-bedford-to-northeast\/","title":{"rendered":"Bullard highlights value of scallops &#8211; lobsters &#8211; New Bedford to Northeast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: normal;\">HYANNIS, MA \u2013 John Bullard, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast regional administrator, took a few minutes during the New England Fishery Management Council\u2019s Sept. 24-26 meeting here to highlight the important contributions to the region\u2019s economy of the scallop and lobster fisheries, as well as the surprising growth of aquaculture.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Bullard distributed a handout titled \u201cOverview of 2012 Fish Landings, Northeast US,\u201d which he said was for \u201cdiscussion purposes only\u201d and wasn\u2019t meant to be used as any kind of official statistics sheet.\u00a0 It ranked the region\u2019s top-producing states, fishing ports, and species, all by dollar value first and then tonnage, to provide a broad overview of each port\u2019s status.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had this put together because I wanted to get a sense of perspective for my own benefit,\u201d Bullard said.\u00a0 \u201cAnd I want to draw your attention to a couple of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First, he said, \u201cWhat is pretty obvious here is the dominance of New Bedford, which, at $407 million, exceeds the other nine top-value ports combined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the dollar value of landings in New Bedford alone came in higher than all but two states in the<br \/>\nNortheast \u2013 Massachusetts, naturally, because it\u2019s home to New Bedford, and Maine, which came in second because of its enormous lobster fishery.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Read the rest and much, much more in the November issue of Commercial Fisheries News.
