Health insurance for all:\u00a0 A new era begins<\/b><\/p>\n

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as ObamaCare, requires most Americans to obtain health insurance by Jan. 1 or pay a tax penalty.\u00a0 It\u2019s set to go online on Oct 1.\u00a0 Most people, especially the many fishermen and their families who don\u2019t already have health insurance, now must get up to speed on the ACA\u2019s requirements, sort through many health insurance options, and make some challenging decisions in the coming months.<\/i><\/p>\n

\"cfn_GC\"<\/a>The ACA creates a \u201cHealth Insurance Marketplace\u201d to offer people a range of insurance plan options, and, for many people, it provides subsidies to help make premiums affordable.\u00a0 The law also fosters the creation of a new type
\nof nonprofit health insurer called Consumer Operated and Oriented Plans (CO-OPs) to offer consumer-friendly, affordable options to individuals and small businesses.<\/i><\/p>\n

Maine Community Health Options (MCHO) is one of these CO-OPs.\u00a0 Recognizing the need for fishermen and their families to better understand the ACA, its requirements, and how to get started with the complex task of obtaining health insurance, MCHO CEO Kevin Lewis agreed to provide answers to the following questions from <\/i>Commercial Fisheries News. \u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

Q:\u00a0 <\/b>What is the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?\u00a0 And what is the \u201cindividual mandate\u201d that it establishes?<\/p>\n

A:\u00a0 <\/b>When people say \u201cAffordable Care Act\u201d (ACA), they are referring to the \u201cPatient Protection and Affordable Care Act\u201d as amended by the \u201cHealth Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010.\u201d\u00a0 The ACA puts in place comprehensive health insurance reforms that will roll out over four years and beyond.<\/p>\n

Put simply, the goals of the ACA are to improve quality and lower health care costs, enact uniform consumer protections, and provide access to care for all Americans…<\/p>\n
