NEW BEDFORD, MA \u2013 After a hiatus of almost 20 years, a New England vessel is back on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.\u00a0 Carlos Rafael\u2019s freezer-equipped, New Bedford-based 111′ groundfish trawler Titan has been making trips to the fabled distant water fishing grounds since last year.<\/p>\n

Although US-flagged vessels have a long history of working these traditionally productive grounds, it took years of diplomacy to secure a quota that once again made it worthwhile to consider sending a US vessel such a distance to fish.<\/p>\n

Last year, Titan landed nearly 2 million pounds of Grand Banks yellowtail flounder, American plaice (dabs), and other groundfish.\u00a0 And, following the completion of her second trip this season late in June, Titan had landed approximately 831,000 pounds of yellowtail and dabs, according to a recent press release from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS)…<\/p>\n
