<\/b>1% set-aside for NE \u2018episodic\u2019 events<\/b><\/h3>\n

ALEXANDRIA, VA \u2013 Atlantic menhaden are prized by lobstermen in New England as a reliable bait alternative to herring.\u00a0 But few people probably ever imaged that these oily little fish \u2013 commonly called pogies \u2013 would become as strictly regulated as almost every other species in the Northeast. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet that\u2019s exactly what has happened.\u00a0 Now, for the first time ever, each coastal state along the Atlantic seaboard has a menhaden total allowable catch (TAC).\u00a0 And, once an individual state\u2019s TAC is reached, fishermen there will be restricted to a bycatch allowance (more on this below).<\/p>\n

The new program was established through Amendment 2 to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission\u2019s (ASMFC) interstate menhaden plan, which the commission\u2019s menhaden board approved last December.<\/p>\n
