{"id":2761,"date":"2013-06-20T09:59:17","date_gmt":"2013-06-20T13:59:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/?p=2761"},"modified":"2013-06-20T16:59:01","modified_gmt":"2013-06-20T20:59:01","slug":"lmr_july-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/lmr_july-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Lobster Market Report &#8211; July 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><b>Canadian catches swamp market; prices suffer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;There are too many lobsters being caught,\u201d a Boston dealer said of the June lobster market.\u00a0 \u201cIt happens every spring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Massachusetts exporter agreed, saying of Canadian landings, \u201cIt is a glut and it is increasing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Maine buyer said Cape Breton, the Magdalene Islands, Newfoundland, Eastern Nova Scotia, and even Southwestern Nova Scotia at the tail end<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2764\" style=\"border-style: initial; border-color: initial; border-width: 0px; margin: 0px;\" alt=\"LMR_sd-SH\" src=\"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/LMR_sd-SH1.jpg\" width=\"210\" height=\"99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/LMR_sd-SH1.jpg 210w, https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/LMR_sd-SH1-150x70.jpg 150w, https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/LMR_sd-SH1-140x66.jpg 140w, https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/LMR_sd-SH1-31x14.jpg 31w, https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/LMR_sd-SH1-38x17.jpg 38w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>of its fishing season had huge catches.\u00a0 An exporter reported 2,800 crates<\/p>\n<p>floating at Cape Breton.\u00a0 But a Canadian exporter argued the problem was not the size of what he called \u201ca substantial catch\u201d as much as it was a problem of sales.<\/p>\n<p>Live market sales were down 30%, the exporter observed.\u00a0 \u201cMore importantly,\u201d he pointed out, a few dealers in both the US and Canada who sell lobster cheap were \u201cundercutting an already weak market.\u201d\u00a0 A Downeast Maine dealer who buys from Canada spoke of \u201call kinds of people calling, selling, and each one (saying) \u2018I can compete with that,\u2019 \u2018I\u2019ll do that,\u2019 and selling for less.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Maine buyer, who had been purchasing one or two trailer-loads out of Canada a week, reported that the huge catches caused prices to drop so frequently she stopped buying.\u00a0 \u201cOur customers know the prices before we buy,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cNobody is buying because they\u2019re waiting for the price to come down another quarter tomorrow.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, she said, \u201cBy the time you get (the lobsters you bought from Canada) in the door that night&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Read the rest and much, much more in the July issue of Commercial Fisheries News.
