Maine elver fishery divides ASMFC; \u00a0<\/b>board postpones action to August<\/b><\/h3>\n

ALEXANDRIA, VA \u2013 Faced with two opposing points of view for how to handle Maine\u2019s lucrative elver fishery \u2013 shut it down completely or let it continue under \u201cstatus quo\u201d with better monitoring \u2013 the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission\u2019s (ASMFC) American Eel Management Board agreed on May 21 to take a step back and appoint a subcommittee to try to find some middle ground.<\/p>\n

The options on the table were part of draft Addendum III to ASMFC\u2019s interstate eel plan, which the board initiated last fall to reduce mortality on all life stages of eels \u2013 glass, yellow, and silver \u2013 after a 2012 benchmark stock assessment determined that the resource was \u201cdepleted\u201d (see page 24 for eel life stages).<\/p>\n

The primary fishery targets yellow eels, which are mostly harvested in the Mid-Atlantic for use as bait in recreational fisheries.\u00a0 But glass eels, also called elvers or \u201cbaby\u201d eels, are the most valuable and are harvested for export to Asia as seed stock for aquaculture facilities and also considered in some cultures to be a gourmet food item.<\/p>\n
