{"id":2106,"date":"2012-12-24T17:07:31","date_gmt":"2012-12-24T21:07:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/?p=2106"},"modified":"2013-01-28T12:14:36","modified_gmt":"2013-01-28T16:14:36","slug":"atlantica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/atlantica\/","title":{"rendered":"Alec Peasley\u2019s new Atlantica:  Roomy, rugged, efficient"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For 19-year-old lobsterman Alec Peasley of Brooksville, ME, the launch of his 34` Atlantica wasn\u2019t so much the beginning of a career as a continuation of one.\u00a0 Peasley set his first load of lobster traps when he was in 7th grade, tending them out of a 14` skiff with a 9.9-hp Mercury outboard on the stern.<\/p>\n<p>In between the skiff and getting his new 34-footer, Peasley spent his nonschool time on the water working a 30` Holland.\u00a0 However, full-time fishing further offshore in harder weather necessitated the move to a bigger boat &#8212; along with the need for more carrying capacity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have to come in early to unload \u2026,\u201d Alec began, then shook his head with a smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought the floor was going to give out in that 30-footer from the lobsters on deck,\u201d said his father, Buster, completing the picture.<\/p>\n<p>There shouldn\u2019t be any worries of that sort with Atlantica.\u00a0 The roomy 34`x13` Calvin Beal Jr.-designed hull allows for plenty of carrying capacity.\u00a0 At the same time, Alec and his father finished the boat with an eye on weight savings and fuel efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know how hard he\u2019s going to fish,\u201d said Buster with a mix of fatherly concern and pride.\u00a0 \u201cSo she\u2019s put together plenty rugged.\u00a0 But with fuel prices being what they are, everything you can save adds up.\u201d<br \/>\nMission accomplished, it appears.\u00a0 Atlantica\u2019s 305-hp Cummins drives her along at 20 knots.<\/p>\n<p>The best part, though?\u00a0 Alec fueled up just before we met up to talk about his new boat, and he\u2019d burned just 40 gallons in three workdays, which included lugging lobster gear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt one point, I had 105 four-footers on,\u201d said Alec, \u201cand I only lost a knot-and-a-half off my cruise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alec Peasley shouldn\u2019t have to cut days short because of Atlantica being overloaded with lobsters, but if he does \u2026 well, there are worse problems to have.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/combined2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2107\" title=\"Alex Peasley's Atlantica\" src=\"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/combined2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"626\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/combined2-140x74.jpg 140w, https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/combined2-31x16.jpg 31w, https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/combined2-38x20.jpg 38w, https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/combined2-403x215.jpg 403w, https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/combined2-220x117.jpg 220w, https:\/\/fish-news.com\/cfn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/combined2-250x133.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 626px) 100vw, 626px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<address>It took Alec, left, and his father Buster six weeks to finish Atlantica once they received the hull and top from SW Boatworks in Lamoine, ME. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Brian Robbins photos<\/address>\n<address>\u00a0<\/address>\n<address><em><strong>Read the rest of the January issue of Commercial Fisheries News.
