<\/p>\nBOSTON, MA \u2013 On Mar. 13-16, a six-member panel will convene here to review the New England Fishery Management Council\u2019s management processes and operations.<\/p>\n
Three fisheries managers and three fisheries scientists will evaluate how the council is performing and offer recommendations.\u00a0 What the council hopes to get from the review are ways to build on its strengths and improve its weaknesses.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe council worked hard to bring together people who have a wide range of skills,\u201d said council spokesperson Janice Plante.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll of the panelists are extremely knowledgeable about the federal fishery management process we use here in the US, and they have a solid understanding of the science that\u2019s behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The panel\u2019s fisheries managers are Robert Beal, executive director of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC), Robert Gill, former member and chair of the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council and current member of the Gulf\u2019s scientific and statistical committee, and Dan Hull, chair of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council.<\/p>\n
Both Gill and Hull are in the fishing industry.<\/p>\n
Gill has owned Shrimp Landing, a dockside wholesale\/retail seafood distributor, for over 30 years.\u00a0 Hull is an Alaska longline halibut and sablefish commercial fisherman and owns the commercial fishing vessel Gretchen S through Hull Fisheries LLC.<\/p>\n
Scientists on the panel include Dr. Pamela Mace, Principal Advisor Fisheries Science to New Zealand; Dr. Bonnie McCay of Rutgers University in New Jersey; and Dr. Kenneth Rose of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science.<\/p>\n
Dr. Mace has worked defining overfishing limits and rebuilding plans in New Zealand and the US.\u00a0 Dr. McCay is an anthropologist who has studied the policy effects of managing common pool resources.\u00a0 Dr. Rose develops mathematical and computer modeling of fish populations and food web dynamics.<\/p>\n
