Periodically, we will focus on a new launch and dig a little deeper into what went into the project \u2013 whether it be a new model or a hull well known to the New England commercial market.\u00a0 What we hope to do is provide insight and information our readers can apply to their own setups \u2026 and, as always, offer up a little entertainment along the way.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/i>\u2014 Editor<\/p>\n
WESTPORT ISLAND, ME \u2013 For the last 20 years or so Dana Faulkingham and his son Jason have divided their years between lobstering and Dana\u2019s Boat Shop.<\/p>\n
They\u2019ve rebuilt and repowered boats; they\u2019ve finished off new hulls of various shapes and sizes; they\u2019ve worked for customers from all over.<\/p>\n
This past building season it was Jason Faulkingham\u2019s turn for a new boat of his own.<\/p>\n
Jason, 39, says he\u2019d never ridden on an Ernest Libby-designed Libby 41 before, but was taken by the looks of one that Ernest\u2019s son Norman and crew finished for Cushing, ME lobsterman Travis Doughty two years ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cI really liked the way that hull looked going through the water,\u201d says Jason.\u00a0 \u201cThis past winter, we talked with Norman Libby about pricing and availability.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen Norman told us, \u2018I can have one for you by February,\u2019 that was it.\u00a0 We put down a deposit.\u201d<\/p>\n
Last and the first<\/b><\/p>\n
Jason\u2019s 41\u2019x15\u20196\u201d hull was the last Libby 41 laid up in Norman Libby\u2019s shop in Jonesport, ME before the mold was shipped to East Side Boat Shop in Machiasport.<\/p>\n
And, as it turns out, the molded top for Jason\u2019s new No Sympathy was the first one built by Frank Coffin and his crew at East Side.\u00a0 (They are now the source for the complete Libby line, which includes the 34, the 38, the 41, and the brand-new 47.\u00a0 See Nauti Buoy page 36.)<\/p>\n
Jason\u2019s hull and top were backed into Dana\u2019s Boat Shop on Westport Island on Mar. 20 \u2013 and the next four months were one solid blur of creativity.<\/p>\n
Jason and Dana were assisted by longtime shop MVP Paul Swidrak, along with Randy Johnson, who lent his talents to the fairing process.\u00a0 Plus, Boothbay fisherman Shawn Murray \u2013 who has had three boats finished by Dana\u2019s Boat Shop \u2013 showed up out of the…<\/p>\n
