FREEPORT, ME \u2013 For someone who spent the biggest part of his working career on the roads of Maine, Tom Peacock is looking pretty comfy at home these days.<\/p>\n

Oh, don\u2019t worry: he\u2019ll jump behind the wheel in a heartbeat if there\u2019s a good reason to \u2026 you can take the man off the road, but you can\u2019t take the road out of the man.<\/p>\n

Sitting with Tom at his home in Freeport one early evening recently, he\u2019s relaxed and smiling \u2013 and obviously enjoying being retired.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Tom and his wife Ann live on land that has been in his family for \u201chundreds of years,\u201d he says with a laugh; their home actually sits on what used to be the lower pasture of his great grandfather\u2019s farm.<\/p>\n

Depending on how old you are, you may know Tom as a diesel engine salesman \u2013 you may have even bought a Detroit Diesel or a Caterpillar off him.\u00a0 Or perhaps you go back a few more years and remember a young Tom Peacock coming down the ladder with a toolbox to repair your 4-53 \u2026 or do a start-up on your new 6-71.<\/p>\n

At 70, Tom has paid his dues and has plenty of memories to share.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s hear a few.<\/p>\n

In the genes<\/b><\/p>\n

Tom Peacock came by his mechanical abilities and willingness to drive for the sake of the job naturally.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad was a very good mechanic,\u201d says Tom.\u00a0 \u201cHe probably should\u2019ve been a engineer.\u201d<\/p>\n

At one point, his father was making the long drive north to Limestone, ME to help construct Nike missile sites \u2013 but Tom\u2019s first real taste of the road came from the period when his dad worked for American Motors.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 1955 they hired him as the service manager for the state of Maine,\u201d says Tom.\u00a0 \u201cHe went everywhere to take care of service issues and technical problems \u2026 Downeast, up north \u2026 everywhere.\u00a0 In the summertime, I\u2019d go…<\/p>\n
