CUSHING, ME \u2013 \u201cI grew up in Rockland, but I spent my summers out on Metinic Island until I was 10.\u00a0 My father lobstered off there; he did that for years.\u00a0 I remember going in his workshop and finding a long lath and putting a point on it \u2013 like the bow of a boat.\u00a0 Then I\u2019d take a shorter lath and drive a nail through the two pieces to hold them together \u2026 and let the nail stick up a little.\u00a0 Made myself a little lobster boat.\u00a0 I\u2019d go to one of the tidal pools on the island and play with it.\u00a0 When I was done, I\u2019d leave it there and let the tide take it out \u2026 and the next day I\u2019d go make another one.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

It was good to hear Danny Staples\u2019 voice on the phone when he called me a couple months ago \u2013 it had been awhile since we\u2019d talked.\u00a0 But we weren\u2019t more than a few moments into the call when I realized he was calling on official CFN business: he wanted to sell his boat.<\/p>\n

The 65-year-old lobsterman had been putting up with abdominal pains for months when he finally gave in and went to see a doctor back in December.<\/p>\n

The news was tough to hear: there was a tumor \u2013 and Danny was in the early days of stage IV cancer.<\/p>\n

Dan met the doctor\u2019s assessment head-on with a flash of humor:<\/p>\n
