After 30 years of custom boat finishing (and all sorts of repairs, repowers and rebuilds) Eric Clark says he’s built his last boat in his Marine Systems shop in Southwest Harbor, ME. (See the Shelby E on page 32.)
Eric grew up around the local boat shops on Mount Desert, working for Mac Pettegrew and Lee Wilbur in his late teens and 20s before opening up his own shop in 1985.
“I always kept my crew small so I could work on the boats myself,” says Eric. “I never wanted to be so big that I ended up sitting in an office all day.”
There’s no arguing that Eric’s approach worked for him — a lot of shops have come and gone during the 30 years he’s been in business.
“For me, I think one of the keys to doing alright was the fact that I never hired outside help for putting in an engine or doing wiring or hydraulics …
