Wayne Hamilton: “Believe in what you’re doing”

SEARSPORT, ME – There are two really good reasons to include a feature on Wayne Hamilton in this issue of Commercial Fisheries News.

First, his Searsport, Maine-based Hamilton Marine is celebrating its 40th birthday.

And second, this is the annual Boat Building Focus of CFN … and if you’ve had a boat built in Maine during the last 40 years, chances are good Hamilton Marine was on the list of suppliers who had a hand in the project.

You might be a longtime Hamilton Marine customer, but I’m betting you don’t know a lot about Wayne himself.

And the thing is, it’s a pretty good story – 70 years old and counting.

Huck Finn days

“I always liked the water,” says Wayne – and his connection with the ocean started when he was a little boy growing up in Searsport.

Wayne was already an experienced dock and raft builder by the time he was 8 years old – but that summer, things really took off, big time.  Wayne’s father helped him salvage a bunch of telephone pole-sized pilings off the shore of nearby Sears Island, along with some 3” planking off some old schooners that were rotting.

Wayne and his buddy used their newfound treasures to build the biggest raft ever – making use of the full length of the pilings, decked over with the 3” planks.
