NEW BEDFORD, MA – The 101’ big steel scalloper Orion is the latest newbuild to join the fleet at the Eastern/Nordic Fisheries/O’Hara docks here.
Like her sister ship Monomoy, (see CFN May, 2016) Orion was built on a standardized John W. Gilbert Associates design. A few tweaks here and there, but overall the Gilbert design has served the company well.
Like all the Eastern/Nordic/O’Hara scallopers, Orion was built by Duckworth Steel Boats of Tarpon Springs, FL.
She measures 101’x28’x14’6” with a double chine, 3/8” steel hull. Like Monomoy, Orion is equipped with a bulbous bow.
Orion’s side plating – from the shucking houses to the transom – were built with 5/8” steel. The main deck/work areas are 1” plating.
The new boat’s fish hold is wet for now, though she was built with freezing-at-sea in mind. If and when that happens, there’s a space built into the fish hold/lazarette area that can be used to hold refrigeration…
