New England, Mid-Atlantic councils to get at least two new members

SILVER SPRING, MD - The state governors have submitted their nominations and, for the second year in a row, it’s already clear that at least two new people will be joining the New England Fishery Management Council this summer.

Four at-large seats are open, those currently held by Bud Fernandes of Maine/New Hampshire, John Williamson of Maine, and Tom Hill and John Pappalardo of Massachusetts.

By law, Williamson is ineligible for reappointment because he is completing his third consecutive term, and Fernandes declined to be renominated. Hill and Pappalardo have both been renominated.

An at-large seat may be filled by an individual from any state represented on the council, but usually goes to someone from the state that has held the seat in the immediate past.

Here is an alphabetical list of the nominees, by state, for the three East Coast councils.

New England council

The nominees for the at-large seats held by Fernandes, Hill, Pappalardo, and Williamson are:

• Maine – Harold Brown, Mary Beth Tooley, and Jim Salisbury;

• New Hampshire – Ellen Goethel, Peter Kendall, and Mike Leary; and

• Massachusetts – Barbara Bragdon, Chuck Casella, Tom Hill, Jim Kendall, John Pappalardo, James Tietje, and Matt Stommel.

The governors of Rhode Island and Connecticut did not submit nominations.

Mid-Atlantic council

Four obligatory and one at-large seats are open on the Mid-Atlantic council this year. They are currently held by: Pat Augustine of New York; Eugene Kray of Pennsylvania; Jimmy Ruhle of North Carolina; Ricks Savage of Maryland; and Charles Witek of New York, at-large. Savage and Witek are not in the running for reappointment, so the Mid-Atlantic council also will welcome at least two new members.

The nominees for the four obligatory seats are:

• New York – Pat Augustine, Christopher Squeri, and Alexander Werner;

• Pennsylvania – John Arway, Robert Bachman, and Eugene Kray;

• North Carolina – Joey Daniels, Jimmy Ruhle, and Billy Tillett; and

• Maryland – Jack Brooks Jr., Jeffrey Eutsler, and Pete Jensen.

The nominees for the at-large seat are:

• New York – Danny Farnum, Paul Forsberg, Bob Hamilton Jr., Scott Holder, and Michael Potts; and

• New Jersey – Edward Goldman, James Gutowski, Jim Lovgren, and Wayne Reichle.

The governors of Delaware and Virginia did not submit nominations.

South Atlantic council

On the South Atlantic council, two at-large seats are open, those currently held by John Dean of South Carolina and George Geiger of Florida. Dean’s name does not appear on the list of nominees.

The nominees are:

• South Carolina – David Cupka, Charles Jordan, and Bo Stokes Jr.; and

• Florida – George Geiger, Michael Kennedy, and Tim Nettles.

The governors of Georgia and North Carolina did not submit nominations.

The secretary of commerce is required by law to announce the final appointments by June 25. New and reappointed council members officially take their seats on Aug. 11.
