The many faces of fish farming:  This issue, meet Dr. Dave Strauss

by Amy Riedel-Stone

STUTTGART, AR – For this issue, I thought it would be good to showcase a government employee with whom I have had the pleasure of working on the US Aquaculture Society (USAS) board of directors.

Dr. David “Dave” Straus, Phd,  has had an interesting career that has allowed him to work with many different types of people.

Dave grew up in western Ohio as one of three boys.  His father was an avid fisherman who took his sons fishing regularly.

This was where Dave’s lifelong interest in fish first began.  Instead of cleaning the fish with his brothers, he dissected them to see what was inside.

As he grew older, he began keeping fish in aquaria at the house.  For his 10th birthday, his family built an ornamental pond; from there he started breeding fish and learning more about their life cycles.

After graduating high school, Dave attended Georgetown College, near Lexington, KY.  He double-majored in chemistry and biology with a focus on environmental biology for his bachelor of science (BS) degree.
