Saving fuel by the barrel

Liberty outfits with the GenTech GT50/60

by Ben L. Evridge
NEW BEDFORD, MA – Fifty gallons per day of fuel saved, and 100 days of working his big steel boat offshore.  That’s how vessel owner Dan Eilertsen describes the benefits so far of his new patented GenTech T50/60 AC power generation system.

The 108’ x 28’ Liberty was built by Main Iron Works in Houma, LA back in 1987.

Main propulsion power comes from a single, keel-cooled, Caterpillar D399.  Starting its life with a pair of dedicated 60kW generator sets in the engine room, eventually the time came for a generator set upgrade.

Dan surveyed the electrical loads and bought a new dedicated diesel-driven marine generator set – “dedicated” meaning the generator’s diesel engines are used solely to produce electrical power.

For the sake of comparison, you should know that 15kW will power a large home in grand style with no limitations.  With a little thoughtfulness, however, the owners of most homes can do really well with 6kW of power…
