New scallopers for Nordic Fisheries, O’Hara Corp.

NEW BEDFORD, MA – So what’s happening at Eastern Fisheries in New Bedford these days?  Plenty, it turns out, with the arrival of two more brand new 90′ scallopers for long-time business partners Peter Anthony and Ron and Roy Enoksen of Nordic Fisheries and the O’Hara family of Rockland, ME.

The partners are moving towards a complete modernization of their fleet and Norseman and Reliance are another step towards that goal.  Nordic Fisheries’ Norseman and O’Hara Corporation’s Reliance are the 10th and 11th new platforms built in the last 10 years.

The identical power packages on scallopers Norseman, shown here, and Reliance, next photo, include 3508 Caterpillar main engines delivering 1,000 hp @ 1600 rpm through Reintjes WAF 562 5.95:1 reduction gears and C18 winch engines supplied by Milton CAT and Karl Senner. Each boat runs a pair of John Deere 4045T 65-kw generators supplied by R.A. Mitchell Company.

Norseman was launched late last summer and began fishing in the fall.  Right on her heels, Reliance was launched on Oct. 24 and began fishing in December.

“We’ve tweaked things a bit here and there, but overall the layout is pretty much the same,” Ronnie Enoksen said.

Why mess with success when the design works well?

Like so many of the Enoksen/O’Hara arrivals over the last few years, both vessels were designed by Gilbert Associates of Hingham, MA and built at Junior Duckworth’s Duckworth Steel Boats Inc. of Tarpon Springs, FL.

Measuring 95’x28’x14′, both vessels are powered by 3508 Caterpillar electronic diesel engines delivering 1,000 hp @ 1600 rpm through Reintjes WAF 562 5.95:1 reduction gears to 6″ Aquamet stainless steel shafts, spinning 79″x71″x4-blade Rolls Royce wheels in 80″ Kort nozzles.  The sister ships’ C18 winch engines are rated for around 460 hp.  Engine and reduction gear packages were supplied by Milton CAT of Milford, MA and Karl Senner, Kenner, LA.  Each boat runs a pair of John Deere 4045T 65-kw generators supplied by R.A. Mitchell Company of New Bedford…
